Short: Fast cross volume file & dir search & run utility v2.0
Author: jcates@page.az.net (James Cates)
Uploader: jcates@page.az.net (James Cates)
Type: util/wb
Replaces: Locate.lha
Requires: OS2.0+
Why another file search program?
Actually Locate is NOT another search program but a front end for
FIND and UPDATEDB an excellent CLI only search program written by
??? (sorry... looked for the docs for this but they have long
ago fallen by the way side. Thanks to whoever wrote FIND and
UPDATEDB!!!)
With two hard hard drives and 9 partitions it 'was' a royal pain
to search through each and every partion one at a time for a file
I had misplaced. Not to mention that searching all the dirs and
subdirs took what seemed like an eternity!
First things First:
Simply unarc the file and place the programs in their respective
directories. C: files in C: etc. You may place Locate in any
Dir you choose.
IMPORTANT- You will need to create a directory named FindDB and
assign FindDB: to it. I suggest you add a line similar to the
following to your user-startup.
ASSIGN FindDB: work:FindDB
Unlike V1.0 LocateV2 requires the CanDo.Library to run properly.
When first running Locate you will need to update(create) a data
base for FIND to use. To do this simply enter all volumes you
would like the database to contain. For example:
dh0: dh1: dh2: dh3: etc. etc.
NOTE each volume must be seperated by a space.
Next click on the UPDATE button... and be prepared to wait
a while. The Author of FIND and FINDDB suggested that the data
base be updated once per week, a suggestion that makes a lot of
sense. Updating the DataBase can take from 10-20 minutes depending
on the number of volumes you include, their size and the number
of directories and files included on/in the volume/partion.
However when the DataBase is created you will have the FASTEST
file/dir search utility I have seen on the Amiga! And what's more
there will be NO NEED TO ENTER A PATH TO SEARCH!!!
To find a file or directory once the database is complete type in
the pattern and click on the LOCATE button, you will have an
entire listing of all Directories and Files that contain any or
all of your specified search patterns within 5 seconds!
Using LocateV2:
THE BUTTONS-
[LOCATE] - will locate any pattern in the database based on
your input. For example: typing, red in the input box and clicking
locate will find... withered, red, redmond, coloured, etc.
Locate will find all Directories and Files that match the pattern.
[UPDATE] - will update the database according to your input.
If the input box is blank and you click the UPDATE button the
database will be updated according to the default set in the
locate.prefs file.
[PRINT] - print the current output to prt:
[PREFS] - clicking this button will pull up the default 'edit'or
and the locate.prefs file found in s:
Prefs lines are:
1. Default path (all volumes you wish to include in the database)
2. Default graphics viewer
3. Default animation viewer
4. Default sound player
5. Default mod player
6. Default text/hyper-text viewer
7. Default text editor
NOTE: ALL default viewers and players must be located in your
Path!
Locate and View/Play/Run:
You may also use Locate to do more than just 'locate' a directory
or file. You may also, run a program, view a graphic or
animation, listen to a sound file, play a music module, view a
text or AmigaGuide file, or edit a text file.
Once you have inputted the required pattern you wish to find and
clicked the LOCATE button, simply click on the file you wish to
perform the 'action' on, (The file will appear in the input box.)
and then click on the desired action button,
[RUN] [GRAPHIC] [ANIMATION] [SOUND] [MODULE] [TEXT] [EDIT]
and the desired action will be carried out.
Enjoy the program,
Please address comments and suggestions for improvements on the
interface to the Author.

ICONS for this program & dir are NEWICONS! IF you don't have the
NEWICONS patch installed they will show up as single pixels on
your Workbench!
